God, the amount of times overthinking has caused suffering in my life is too many to count! The thing is personally for me I find so much freedom when I stop trying to push the thoughts away and investigate what they are trying to tell me, and then I can choose different ways to think. THank you for writing and sharing your experience.
Overthinking can truly suck the joy out of our lives. It is something I have been guilty of many a time. Realising that overthinking does nothing but compound my problems is what led me to partially break the cycle. I still overthink from time to time but I don't let it ruin my days or cause me to avoid taking action.
All problems are imaginary. Indeed, we are imaginary. We all live in our heads and each of us sees the World and all in it in a different and unique way. Of course, their are universal similarities but that doesn't change the fact that in reality, the only reason we know we're alive is that it is what we've been conditioned to believe and what our mind tells us. We have no way of knowing whether it is true or not.
So, nothing actually matters for all of us are nothings so there really is no need for fuss about anything. Not that I'm any better than anyone else at escaping my imagination for it is an impossibility. Perhaps gurus or Zen Buddhists and the like can come close but ultimately, they too are the same as the rest of us, they've just resolved to be still. I reckon that's why the Dalai Lama laughs at everything. As my dad used to say, "It's all a farce, that's all, all a farce." I didn't have a clue what he was talking about. Now, at almost 80, I think I'm much closer for life is a farce.
We run around like ants in a nest and are just as readily squashed and all our effort and energy wasted in quicker than the blink of an eye. Even if we live long it is unlikely to be beyond perhaps 110 years, give or take. In other words, a mere moment in time, here - be busy - be gone. So, as Alfred E Neuman said: "What me worry" ...
