Beautiful true work 👏 I once had an opportunity of giving art away at a homeless shelter way up in the mountains. Years went by and a friend asked me to go along as she met up with an old friend. After a couple of minutes visiting the man we'd visited, he said, "Hey! I have your painting in the dining room! I look at that every day, remember when....?" Oh! I felt ecstatic and shocked that yes, my work was hanging there with some shelves and little golden treasures. It was like a kiss from God. You're so right.
The importance of staying connected to your community and surroundings can hardly be overstated. From the offer of a helping hand to a simple smile from someone you know that makes a hard day a bit more bearable, a community can make a world of difference to your life.
And any assistance I offered was driven by the quality of your work. It deserved to be read and enjoyed by many more people. I am glad to have been fortunate to play a tiny role in your Substack journey so far 😊.
Regarding the ideas flowing- often I’ll see several posts on here that touch upon similar topics but with slightly different takes. It’s like a universal connection
Everything is so connected, yes! Yet we humans have a tendency, (in my view), to focus on difference in a negative way and to miss or sometimes even refuse to see or accept connections which are clear.
It is so good to read an article such as this for I fear that because so many seem unable to see difference as opportunity, instead seeing it as deficit or even danger, we all miss out on the enormous synergy our race would have if we focused on our commonality - the universalities of being human, rather than the differences - what I would suggest is very much about learning to empathise or what is commonly known as 'walking a mile in my shoes.'
Sadly, we often focus on our differences instead of finding common grounds.
At the same time, I love, love that you pointed out that even differences can be opportunities if viewed from the right angle. And the advice about walking a mile in someone else’s shoes? Gold!
Thank you so much for pouring your heart into this response, Roger. I deeply appreciate your perspective.
